At least that’s what I’m assuming. Its listed under future vehicles when you go onto Mazda’s site. It also has its own page you can sign up for more info on:
This is confusing for a myriad number of reasons, mainly, and this goes back to my talking point of the stupidity of crossovers. And here I thought it would be a replacement for the CX-3. But that’s not the case . Motor Trend and Jalopnik reports that the CX-30 will slot between the CX-3 and CX-5. Motor Trend did a side by side comparison between the CX-3 and CX-30 after Mazda released preliminary Euro specs for the CX-30: Mazda has released preliminary European specifications for the CX-30, which, if they ring true for the U.S. market, would put the model at 4.7 inches longer than the CX-3 and 1.2 inches wider. They would share the same height, while the wheelbase on the CX-30 would be 3.3 inches longer. Ground clearance increases 0.6 inch on the CX-30.
2019 Mazda CX-3
Lets break this down to see how this is going to fit. A CX-3 has a wheelbase of 101.2 inches with an overall length of 168.3 inches, width of 69.6, height of 60.7 and ground clearance of 6.1 inches. With the specs released for the CX-30, that would peg the CX-30 at 173 inches long, 70.8 inches wide, with a 104.5 inch wheelbase and a measly 6.7 inches of ground clearance over the CX-3.
2019 Mazda CX-5
When you compare the CX-30 against the CX-5 above it dimensions wise, it gets grayer . The CX-30, and again, that’s if these specs stick, will be just 6.1 inches shorter than the CX-5 while riding on a wheelbase just 1.7 inches shorter and having 0.8 inches of ground clearance difference.
These specs just beg the question as to why the CX-30 would even come here and why for the most part most crossovers don’t make sense. Mazda, like other automakers, seem to just be filling spots in their lineup with no thought whatsoever. There isn’t much of a difference size wise to choose it it over the CX-3 or CX-5. And when pricing is released its probably going to overlap both and end up being within a few hundred bucks in the upper trims of a bigger CX-5. At this point it would make more sense to either have it be a redesigned CX-3, which honestly could work as the CX-3 is pointlessly small, or not come to the states at all. And depending on how well it sells, it could spell doom for the the recently redesigned, and still unreleased as of this writing 3.

It is confusing but my theory is they will be sold next to each other for a year or so after which the curent CX3 is discontinued and the CX30 becomes the de facto CX3 for US.
I still think they should have gone for the midsize segment with a new version of the China CX4 to go against Edge Murano Santa Fe etc. B ut then again what do I know?

No more confusing than what Ford did with the Escape/Edge/Flex/Explorer. Mazda will probably decontent the CX-3 (“limited edition”) while giving the 30 all the updated features; gives them a chance to pull away X1 or GLA customers while retaining their value base. Just a guess though.

This is what I’m assuming will happen. It should happen.
I thought about them bringing over the CX-4 too, but it seems to be some kind of weird lifted cross sedan thing that wouldnt work here. We’ve passed that point here in the US. Which is why the Crosstour/ZDX and Venza are all dead.

Not quite the same though. This is like Ford releasing a vehicle that’ s inbetween the Ecosport and Escape (which at this point, I wouldn’ t doubt happening). But you’ re guess makes sense. That interior alone might outdo the GLA.

Why not just take the AWD Mazda3 , lift it up a couple inches, and give it the Crosstrek treatment?

This would make way more sense than basing a bigger vehicle on a smaller vehicle with little to no gain in fuel economy, driving dynamics etc.

because soon manufacturers will be trying to create as many stupid categories as rental companies. Compact CUV, Medium CUV, Large CUV. compact SUV, M SUV, L SUV, XL SUV, because categories aren’t going to invent themselves. dammit.

BMW-itis is spreading through the industry.

I wonder if the -30 is actually the replacement for the -3 (they’ll just sell both for a while), and a -50 is coming that will replace the -5 (that will be larger by some significant measure).
